On Thursday 2nd September, the Danish Minister of Transport, Benny Engelbrecht, officially inaugurated the large on site residential area in Rødbyhavn on Lolland, where the tunnel construction workers of the Fehmarnbelt project are accommodated.

Together with the Mayor of Lolland Municipality, Holger Schou Rasmussen and the chairman of the board of the Fehmarn consortium FLC, Sébastien Bliaut, the Danish Minister of Transport, Benny Engelbrecht, welcomed the workers to the village that will be their home while they work on the extensive tunnel construction.

The tunnel village is an extension of the tunnel construction site, east of Rødbyhavn. Here, the tunnel workers are accommodated in single en-suite rooms with access to Wifi. The city with a size of 30,000m2 will also house a canteen, fitness centre and recreational facilities.

Accommodation for 1300 workers

The government has placed an emphasis on the requirement for a good working environment, so I am very pleased to see that great demands have been made on the room standards, here in Tunnel Village, the Minister of Transport, Benny Engelbrecht, said at the inauguration.

When the village is fully completed, there will be accommodation for over 1,300 workers, and the first of these have already moved in. The residential area will gradually grow until 2023 as the construction of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel progresses.

Lolland welcomes the workers

"It's impressive to see how fast the new village is rising. We look forward to welcoming the many new residents to Lolland, and to showing them how much the area right outside their door has to offer,” said Holger Schou Rasmussen, Mayor of Lolland Municipality.

Feeling well received

The tunnel consortium FLC already feels very well received.

"We are happy and grateful for the warm welcome we have been met with here on Lolland, and we look forward to becoming an active part of the local community," said Sébastien Bliaut, Chairman of the Board of FLC.
