The Danish Government and Femern A/S have agreed to establish a local authority centre close to the Fehmarn construction site, which will ensure safe and proper working conditions for Danish and foreign workers, the Danish Ministry of Employment states in a press release.
The work of establishing the fixed link across the Fehmarnbelt is underway, and this means that there is a continual increase of Danish and foreign workers employed on the construction site in Rødbyhavn.
Local Authority centre in Rødbyhavn
Following the experiences concerning a case of lack of work permits among 28 Russian seafarers on two tugs employed on the Fehmarn construction, discussions about how the supervision of the construction work can be strengthened and assisted, to ensure a good working environment, have been held.
In this regard, it has been agreed that a local authority centre will be established close to the Fehmarn construction site in Rødbyhavn. The new authority centre will cooperate to ensure safe working conditions and proper conditions for the employees on the construction site, and that the construction work takes place within the legislative frameworks.
Fair and safe working conditions
The Danish Minister for Employment and Gender Equality, Peter Hummelgaard, says:
“As Minister of Employment, of course I have a sharp focus on fair and safe working conditions. Therefore, I am very pleased that a local authority centre is now being established close to the Fehmarn construction site in Rødbyhavn, where the Danish Working Environment Authority and other relevant authorities will have the opportunity to ensure safe working conditions for the workers on the construction site. ”
"In addition to that, I am proud to help put the necessary focus on the working environment on all major infrastructure projects, where many both Danish and foreign are employed," says Peter Hummelgaard.
3F welcomes the centre
Claus von Elling, Chairman of 3F Building, welcomes the government's initiative on the Fehmarn construction.
"It is a good, proactive effort. Our experience from other large buildings, such as the metro, the supersize hospitals and the Storstrøm Bridge, is that there is a need to have resources close to the construction site; both to inform employees about pay conditions and rights, but also to raise issues if employers do not comply with the law,” he says.
